Tina M. Shultz Memorial Award

Tina Marie Shultz

1968-1986

Tina Marie Shultz was a member of the 1985-86 class of county dairy princesses.  Selected to serve as Huntingdon County’s Dairy Princess in June of 1985, she did an outstanding job of promoting the dairy industry and its products under extremely difficult personal complications.

Just three months before her county pageant she lost her left leg to cancer and throughout her reign she battled the insidious disease.  Except when she was hospitalized, Tina seldom missed an engagement or opportunity to promote.  As Beth Heald, 1985-86 PA State Dairy Princess, wrote “Tina represented the dairy industry with a sense of pride and devotion that was admired by everyone who knew her. . . (she) fulfilled her role as Dairy Princess with as much enthusiasm and hard work as those of us who are healthy.”

Following Tina’s death in May of 1986, her sister princesses established a fund for an award to be given in her honor.  It seemed fitting that the “Outstanding County Promoter Award” initiated in 1985 be designated the “Tina Shultz Memorial Award”.    In 1993, a second memorial was attached to the “Tina M. Shultz Memorial Award” in memory of Margaret Shultz of Montgomery County, also a member of the Princess Class of 1985-86 who succumbed to cancer in 1993.

This award is given annually to the Princess who has done the most effective job of serving her area as Dairy Princess.  It is based on the number and types of appearances she has made as an individual and the local circumstances under which she has served.

The winner of the Tina M. Shultz Memorial Award must be a dedicated, enthusiastic promoter of the dairy industry who is willing to go “beyond the call of duty” to carry out her assignment

2005-2006 Tina M. Shultz Memorial Award winner is
Genna Chilson from Bradford County.

The 2006 winner of the Tina M. Schultz Memorial Award is Genna Chilson of Bradford County .  She is the 17 year old daughter of David and Jennifer Chilson, of Ulster , PA.

This award is given annually to the County Dairy Princess who is judged to have done the most outstanding job of representing the dairy industry within her county.  It is based on the number and types of appearances she has made as an individual at the county level and the local circumstances under which she has served.      Genna’s road to become a dairy princess started many years ago.  She does not live on a dairy farm, however her grandparents, Alston and Genevieve Teeter have owned and operated their farm, T-Stead Farm for over 50 years where they have registered Holsteins .  Having grandparents that are dairy farmers qualified Genna to become a dairy maid and she did that for 3 years before she ran and won the title of dairy princess.  Her enthusiastic and bubbly personality allowed her to make learning about dairy fun.   Genna believes in the health benefits of dairy and admires dairy farmers for their hard working attitudes.   She was dedicated, passionate and professional while promoting the dairy industry and its products.

When Genna was asked what her favorite dairy promotion was during her reign, she said “There are so many wonderful promotions, how could I possibly choose?”    While many dairy promoters feel uncomfortable when they must speak in front of others of their age group, Genna enjoyed sharing the benefits of dairy with other high school students.   For elementary students and other groups, Genna donned her Cat In the Hat costume to perform her state pageant award winning skit to entertain and educate.

During her reign in Bradford County , she managed to complete an astonishing number of local promotions totaling 421 promotions and reaching over 33,047 plus the thousands reached by newspaper articles and radio appearances.  To accomplish this, Genna traveled over 5,135 miles in Bradford County !  Her county promotions to achieve this award include 161 school programs, 123 news articles, 46 radio appearances, 27 store and mall promotions, 25 non-farm presentations, 6 farm meetings and 33 special events.

Genna is a senior at Athens Area School and plans to attend college but her field of study and at which school is undecided.  She regularly babysits three children.   Genna volunteers at her church, helps with Vacation Bible Church , performed in the church’s dinner theater production of Virgil and helps in the nursery.   Her hobbies include cooking, sewing, knitting and horseback riding.

The Tina M. Schultz Award is given annually in memory of the 1985-86 Huntingdon County Dairy Princess who did an outstanding job of promoting the dairy industry and its products while fighting a losing battle with cancer.  The Tina Shultz Award winners must be dedicated, enthusiastic dairy promoters who are willing to go far beyond the “requirements” on behalf of the industry and its products.   Genna has certainly qualified herself for this recognition on all levels of this award.    Genna, you should be proud of your accomplishments to reach this award.  Congratulations – Genna!!
